Update on TGB’s Third-Party Verification

On September 30th, COTAP received the below update from our partner Ecotrust Uganda regarding the verification status of the Trees for Global Benefits (TGB) community reforestation carbon project…

Subject: Update On Trees for Global Benefit (TGB) Third Party Verification Exercise.

Dear COTAP,

We are writing to provide a formal update on the current ongoing Third Party verification exercise in accordance with Plan Vivo Standard Guidelines. We recognize the importance of timely and transparent communication, particularly in relation to project performance and compliance, and we appreciate your patience and continued support.

Trees for Global Benefit has since last year (2024) been undergoing third party audit against the Plan Vivo Standard – led by Aster Global, which is one of the approved VVBs under the Plan Vivo Standard. The Verification Objective is to ensure that the project continues to conform to the Standard and that it continues to deliver carbon emission reductions, and other expected benefits, to local ecosystems and livelihoods. The intention was to have this exercise concluded by end of 2024 however, we have experienced delays in finalizing the audit report driven by a combination of factors below, each of which was necessary to uphold the integrity and rigor of the audit process:

Field Visit Postponements Due to Ebola outbreak in Uganda: Scheduled field visits by the third-party verification team were unavoidably postponed following the Ebola outbreak declared on 30 January in Uganda. The health and safety of our staff, community members, and verification personnel remained our top priority. In adherence to public health advisories and containment protocols, the field visits were differed, which impacted on the audit timeline.

Project Scale and Complexity: The TGB project encompasses a wide geographical area and involves a substantial number of stakeholders, activities, and data points. Given the scale of operations, the audit required a significant amount of time to ensure that all components were thoroughly reviewed and accurately documented.

Depth of Scrutiny: In line with our commitment to transparency and quality assurance, the audit team adopted a meticulous, fine-comb approach to the review. This included cross-verifying field data, assessing documentation, and evaluating compliance with carbon standards. While this level of scrutiny extended the timeline, it was essential to ensure the credibility and robustness of the findings.

Despite these delays, we are pleased to report that the audit has not revealed any major findings or concerns. We are confident that the final report will reflect the integrity and impact of the initiative including its continued efforts towards meeting its stated objectives and remains compliant with relevant carbon standards and methodologies.

We will share the final audit report with you as soon as it’s complete. In the meantime, please feel free to reach out with any questions.

Thank you once again for your understanding and continued partnership.
