Meet A Farmer: Winfred Musimenta

We’re pleased to share this interview with Winfred Musimenta, the head teacher at the Rumuri Primary School. The school has been enrolled in our partner Ecotrust’s Trees for Global Benefits (TGB) community carbon project since 2011. A mother of five who’s been with the school since 2014, Winfred discusses how the school got introduced to TGB, the types of trees which have been planted, and the benefits which they provide.

Winfred also discusses how Ecotrust’s long-term support (from carbon offset revenues!) is instrumental in establishing and maintaining the plantings. The Rumuri school is located in Rubirizi, in the far southwestern corner of Uganda near Queen Elizabeth National Park and the DRC border.

Ani Matamosi

Along with around 30 other fabulous women from eight mataqali (clans) in the Drawa Rainforest Carbon Project, Ani is running a honey business in Batiri village, Fiji, set up with income from carbon credits.

Ani says "We women are really happy about this beekeeping business because for some of us, only our husband earns money and beekeeping has enabled us to earn money ... we learn not only to take care of bees but also to be business minded. It has boosted our confidence and self-esteem to engage more in income generating activities, so we want to keep our business alive."

In 2012, Oliva became a participant of Ecotrust Uganda’s Trees for Global Benefits project. She lives in the Maliba community of Western Uganda’s Kasese district, and she’s planted 400 trees which are sequestering an estimated 203.4 tonnes of CO2.

Oliva is projected to earn $610.40 from TGB. In this interview, you’ll learn how she uses those earnings, as well as about her children and grandchildren, one of her favorite ways to relax, what “MIFA” stands for, how she lost some of her trees, and how her community views firewood thieves!
