Carbon Offsets To Alleviate Poverty (COTAP) specializes in connecting your carbon footprint with accredited forestry projects in least-developed countries which create life-changing income for smallholder farmers who live on less than $2 per day.

What we’re doing and why

The Capuchino Social Justice Club has partnered with COTAP to encourage our classmates and their families to measure their annual CO2 emissions, to offset some or all of them, and to create life-changing wages for the poorest people in the world.

Why we’re doing it

Even as we take steps to advocate for cleaner energy sources and to reduce our personal contributions to climate change, each of us will still have an unavoidable carbon footprint (from driving, home energy use, and air travel) for the foreseeable future.  Carbon offsets are an established, market-based tool through which individuals can support projects which counteract the CO2 emissions which they haven’t yet been able to eliminate themselves.

How It Works

1) Students and their families can measure their personal CO2 emissions below, and then choose what portion of their emissions to offset. COTAP’s carbon calculator methodology can be found here.

2) You’re done!  You’ve addressed your annual CO2 emissions while creating life-changing income for farmers in least-developed countries!  90.9% of funds go directly to COTAP’s projects and all tonnes offset through this program will be evenly allocated to COTAP’s four portfolio projects in Nicaragua, Mozambique, Uganda, and Malawi.

3) COTAP will track and report results at the end of the Offset-A-Thon.  May the best class win!

More about COTAP

COTAP is a 501(c)3 public charity with a dual mission which puts poverty alleviation on an equal footing with climate change abatement.  All COTAP projects are registered under the Plan Vivo carbon accounting standard, which requires projects to directly share carbon offset proceeds with farmers.  Further, COTAP is uncommonly transparent and modest about its margins so that farmer income creation can be monitored, managed, and improved.  COTAP is filling financing gaps in the carbon markets so that poverty-alleviating forestry projects can get a better per-tonne carbon price, at an earlier stage, and at a greater volume so that they can go further and faster, reach more people, and thus improve more lives.
